September 11, 2015 | What India is Doing to Create Successful Solar Projects
People all over the world are waking up to the unpleasant realities of global warming and the effects burning fossil fuels has on its acceleration. With most current energy sources being both harmful to the environment and non-renewable, many countries are beginning to utilize solar energy as a more sustainable energy solution.
One country currently investing in many new solar projects is India. As you’ll see, India’s solar projects have seen a great deal of success so far. By learning from India’s innovative approaches to solar energy, businesses, individuals and countries alike can create a positive impact on the environment and provide sustainable and successful energy solutions.
Solar Park at Charanka Village
The sustainable energy project in Charanka is one of the most unique in the country. The park was built on over 5,000 acres of land and has the power to produce energy from both solar and wind, offering a photovoltaic solar capacity of 214 MW (set to expand to 500 MW in coming years). Along with producing solar energy, it also produces panels and other equipment related to solar energy. This has been a great benefit for the economy of the area because it has created jobs for the people and training so that they are able to work in other solar parks.
Solar Power Plant at Gujarat's Canal
The Canal Solar Panel Project launched in the spring of 2012. Located near Mehsana and slated to stretch along the 19,000 kilometers of the Narmada Branch Canal, it is estimated that the plant will offer 1.6 million units of energy on an annual basis. Since it has been built over the canal, the solar project prevents about 9 million liters of water from being evaporated, which helps to save water in a place where clean water sources can often be scarce. Additionally, building the project over water saves the 11,000 acres of land necessary for the project from being built on. To make matters even better, this project actually produces about 15% more energy than similar projects built over land.
Mahagenco by Maharashtra State Power Generation
Mahagenco is a branch of the Maharashtra State Power Generation Company that provides most of the power to the Maharashtra state in Western India. The company is able to generate a high capacity of power for the country with a combination of hydro, solar, and thermal energy.
The company has plans to expand their ability to generate electricity, in order to keep up with the ever-growing demand. To do this, they are currently planning a major capacity addition program to increase the amount of energy that they are able to produce. Part of this new program includes the construction of six new solar facilities.
Early in 2014, India announced plans to construct the world's largest solar plant, located on 77 kilometers of land, near Sambhar Salt Lake. The project will take seven years and cost an estimated $4.4 billion dollars to complete, but once the plant gets running, it will create an estimated 6.4 billion kilowatt-hours of energy every year and effectively triple the current amount of energy being harvested from the sun in India.
Many more companies are also beginning to invest and build solar projects throughout the rural parts of India.
Solar energy projects have seen great success in India largely because of the structure of the land and the nation’s weather patterns. Approximately 300 days every year are sunny, which means that the country is able to maximize the exposure that solar panels have to the sun. Plus, since sunlight is stronger the closer that a country is to the equator, India is able to gather more energy in less time.
Countries around the world are now realizing the massive benefits of investing in solar energy. As a result of their innovative approaches to solar power, India is poised to become a leading example of how those countries can integrate solar into their own power systems. With many successful projects already completed and many more in the works, it will be interesting to see where India leads the solar energy industry in the future.
